Summer is often a time of complicated feelings for me. Obviously I enjoy the long days, warm weather and time outdoors with friends and family, but it is also the time of bad portents for the climate crisis. We’ve already witnessed fires, floods and higher than average temperatures, and coupled with record profits for the fossil fuel industry it all starts to be enough to get me hot under the collar!
But summer is also a time to enjoy the fruits of the natural world, to see it in bloom and to commune with it and each other. It’s also a great time to make plans to take action for climate justice in the rest of the year, which is what this special newsletter update is all about.
Join us for our second network gathering of the year to talk about all things fossil fuel finance. We discuss how UK banks and institutions fund, subsidise, insure and support fossil fuel projects around the world, and what people of faith can do about it.

There are a couple of campaigns we will be hearing about at this gathering:
Insure Our Future is a global campaign of NGOs and social movements that hold the insurance industry accountable for its role in the climate crisis. They call on insurance companies to immediately stop insuring new fossil fuels and phase out support for existing coal, oil and gas projects. We’ll hear about how we can support the campaign which is targeting Lloyd’s of London, as well as other UK based insurers.
The Stop EACOP campaign targets French oil company Total, which is on the cusp of building the world’s longest heated oil pipeline right through the heart of Africa. Stretching for nearly 1,445 kilometers, the East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) would have disastrous consequences for local communities, for wildlife and for the entire planet. We in the UK have the means to stop it, and by doing so we can stand in solidarity with communities on the frontlines of the climate crisis.
Our Speakers: 
– Anna Lewis, who works for the Quakers UK on campaigning and advocacy for climate and economic justice. She will be talking about the Insure Our Future campaign, which targets Lloyd’s of London
– Meryne Warah, Global Director of Organising at GreenFaith, who will be talking about EACOP, the pipeline project in East Africa that will devastate local communities and is being supported by UK institutions

We’re really excited to reconnect with you, especially after a hugely successful Great Big Green Week for our network. It’s going to be jam-packed with information and avenues for action on the climate. Wherever we live, there are ways we can act to stand in solidarity with frontline communities, and to help usher in a future that centres climate justice. Whatever your plans are for the summer, whether you are resting, socialising or planning for the rest of the year, I hope to reconnect with you all properly at our July network meeting.
